Abstract

We estimated both internal and external bioerosion rates in dead colonies of coral Orbicella annularis at reef from Playa Mero at Morrocoy National Park (Falcón State, Venezuela), establishing a preliminary assessment of skeleton-structure loss after mortality of corals Morrocoy National Park during 1996. We collected randomly 12 pillars of O. annularis colonies from three different depths: three, six and nine meters. Then, based on the growth axis of colonies, we performed cut of 10???????? thick in each collected colony and photographed them by X-rays in order to detect the fingerprints of bio-erosion groups. For each cut and footprint herein detected, we determined the eroded surface area (kg.m−2.year−1), the rates of external bioerosion (based on the width of the annual growth bands (#bands.year-1), and the Importance Value Index (IVI) of each bio-erosion group. We estimated a coral substrate loss by an internal bioerosion, on average, of 0.068 kg.m−2.year−1,being the bivalve the dominant internal bioerosion group (IVI= 196.78). Likewise, the external bioerosion rate was of 2.97 cm.year−1 equivalent to 2 bands.year-1. We only observed statistical significant differences between the number of total footprints and total area eroded by the bio-erosion groups. This result discarded a possible effect form depth variable within the bioerosion process in dead colonies of O. annularis at reef from Playa Mero.
