Entomofauna associated to species of fern Pteridium (Pteridopsida:Dennstaedtiaceae) in the Cerro La Bandera at Venezuelan Andes.

Abstract

We performed a comparison between the species integrating insect community associated to the ferns Pteridium caudatum and P. arachnoideum at Cerro La Bandera, from the Venezuelan Andes. We conducted weeklies sampling, since June 2012 to May 2013, in order to collect manually the insects observed on the ferns, calculating the values of relative abundance for each species/morphotype reported. The values of species richness and diversity for the insect community in each fern were calculated using the numbers of Hill (0D, 1D and 2D), while the similarity in the composition of the communities was evaluated using the Jaccard similarity (JI) coefficient and a similarity analysis (ANOSIM). We observed 42 and 41 species of insects associated to P. caudatum and P. arachnoideum, respectively. The orders Hymenoptera, Hemiptera, Diptera and Coleoptera were the most representative groups. The results showed that both ferns species were similar in the number and taxonomic composition of species (JI = 0.80) that they harbored, but with statistically significant differences (R = 0.33; p = 0.0001) in terms of structure and abundance values for the organisms among insect communities associated to P. caudatum (1D = 29 y 2D = 17) and P. arachnoideum (1D = 25 y 2D = 13). We observed that 13 of the most abundant species of insect explained 74.61% of the dissimilarity between both communities. We observed nine trophic guilds within the insect communities in the ferns, which showed significant differences χ2 = 91.81; p = 0.001) for the abundance values among them. These results contribute to increase our knowledge about the levels of specialization and functional characteristics of the species within the plant-insect interaction.
