The Cordillera de Mérida, located in the south- west of Venezuela, presents an orography characterized by a high and narrow mountain range located in the tropical belt, which in turn determines an extensive climatic variabi- lity. These characteristics are in fact responsible for the great heterogeneity and diversity of ecosystems present within the region. Considering the conceptual and methodological as- pects of the Rivas-Martínez (2004), as well as the spatial in- tegration (including statistical interpolations of spatial data and alto-thermic regressions) of meteorological station data, in this study we present a bioclimatic map for the Cordillera de Mérida, analyzing the spatial variability of three main pa- rameters: temperature, precipitation, and seasonality. Like- wise, ombro-thermal index maps of the driest period of two months (Iod2) and the bioclimate map were prepared. Ove- rall, the dominance of a wet pluvi-seasonal bioclimate was ob- served across the Llanos flank; while the humid pluvial and sub-humid pluvial bioclimate were associated with the lacus- trine flank of the mountain range. The application of this bio- climatic approach has allowed us to increase the knowledge about the alto-thermic variability and its association with the presence of different climatic regimes flanking this mountain range. This information type is essential to understand the dis- tribution patterns of the Andean vegetation and could be used to future studies about associated biodiversity in the region.
