Why just the Salt pan? The need to integrate the “Ciénaga de Los Olivitos” Wildlife Refuge and the International Shorebird Reserve for conservation purposes in Venezuela

In Venezuela, there are seven areas that have been designated as Wildlife Refuges, whose primary objectives are the protection and recovery of populations of threatened species. Among these areas, the Ciénaga de Los Olivitos (RFSCLO), located on the northeastern coastal plain of Lake Maracaibo, stands out for its high ecological value and importance, as it serves as a breeding ground for threatened species such as Phoenicopterus ruber and Crocodylus acutus, and is included among the wetlands protected by the Ramsar Convention. However, the recent designation of La Salina Solar (a complex of artificial lagoons adjacent to the RFSCLO) as an International Shorebird Reserve highlights administrative shortcomings in the management of the RFSCLO and the need to join forces for conservation by integrating both areas, to effectively protect the more than 10,000 shorebirds that use these habitats each year.
