In the Páramo of Chingaza (Colombia) four zones of the Espeletia killipii –Chusquea tessellata community subject to variable levels of disturbance by fire and grazing were chosen based upon the recovering time after fire and the grazing intensity. The studied zones were a. without any anthropic disturbance (fire or grazing); b. a site with seven years of fire recovery and occasional grazing; c, more than three years of fire recovery and frequent grazing; and finally d. with a history of intensive grazing. The 0-5 cm deep seed bank and the 5–10 cm deep seed bank were studied using the ter Heerdt et al. (1996) method. In each case the variables density, richness, diversity and density were analyzed. The density for each depth (0 cm-5 cm; 5 cm- 10 cm) was 9133 seeds/m2 and 3840 seeds/m 2 for zone a; 4194 seeds/m2 and 1376 seeds/m 2 for zone b; 4021 seeds/m2 and 595 seeds/m2 for zone c; 39138 seeds/m 2 and 17442 seeds/m 2 for zone d. Seed abundance, richness and diversity decreased with the intermediate disturbance and increased in the zone with intensive grazing (d). In all the studied sites 70% of the seeds were found in the first 5 cm of the soil
