      Abstract

This study reports the group foraging behavior and individual feeding of a white face Saki (Pithecia pithecia) isolated troop found in an island of Guri Dam, giving emphases to juvenile development and their adults dependence. One thousand two hundred fifty eight focal-animal samples were taken, accomplishing 315 hours of observation. Foraging time, kind of food, items consumed and the identity of the adult nearness to the juvenile were recorded. Seventy eight percent of the foraging time consisted of: 32.5% seeds, 24.1% fruits, 8.2% leaves, 7.7% insects, 0.7% honey, 0.5% flowers, 0.5% milk and 3.5% unidentified items. Food type, species consumed, and foraging time varied as a function of the climate season. The troop showed spatial fragmentation in subgroups. All animals spent a significant foraging time for seeds on the ground. Individual feeding preferences varied at age and sex. The consumption rate was lower in juveniles, showing a particular conduct of robbing food from adults. The foraging behavior in this troop was characterized by considerable dietary flexibility apparently conditioned by available and limited food resources
